I’ve written and/or published a number of non-fiction books, and one story for children.
The first book (Liverpool: the first 1,000 years) was a local best-seller for virtually no marketing effort. It was perfect timing – a matter of massive luck on our part, not publishing savvy – but we wondered why everyone made such a fuss about selling books. This was easy, we thought, as the book climbed up the Waterstones chart in the weeks before and after Christmas, passing Delia Smith, Ali G, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter…
From book number two onwards, we realised just how lucky we’d been with our first effort. Still, we had fun, and made enough money to keep us in scouse and wet nellies.
